Lavender Sugar Scrub

I love to pamper myself as much as the next person and one way I do that is using lavender sugar scrub to exfoliate my skin. My favorite time to use it is right after I shave my legs. It gives such a soft feeling to my legs and especially during the winter months it helps to get rid of any lingering dry skin.

The great thing about this scrub is that you can throw it together in just a couple of minutes! Mix everything in one bowl and stir!

Lavender essential oils are good for so many things such as promoting relaxation, treating depression, anxiety, and can even treat fungal infections! So many great benefits to using something as simple as this Lavender Sugar Scrub.

I got this super cute container from Hobby Lobby with the little wooden spoon that is the perfect amount to use each time! But really you just want any container that seals airtight. And you might need to give it a stir before using as the oils will probably make their way to the bottom of the jar.

How beautiful is this scrub? And it made enough for two containers!  So I'll keep one for myself and the other is for my bestie, because it is a great gift!

Lavender Sugar Scrub
  • 1 cup white sugar

  • ¼ C fractionated coconut oil

  • 5 drops lavender essential oil

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • Soap colorant (optional- I used a lilac color I already had)

  1. Combine all ingredients into a bowl.

  2. Enjoy! (Yes, it is really that easy!)

I love using this Lavender Sugar Scrub! Not only does it have an amazing, relaxing smell but it is great for our skin!

Summer swallowed a Quarter

If you follow along on social media, you've probably already seen what happened last weekend.

Literally, one of the scariest moments of my life.

Of course it didn't start out that way. We had a great afternoon at a birthday party for a good friend at the pumpkin patch. At one point Summer ran up to me and showed me that she found a quarter in the bounce house, so exciting when you're 6!

I never really thought another second about that quarter. My kids have been told not to put things in their mouth, they know not to ever put money in their mouth, nothing to be concerned about, right?

That night I got Summer tucked into bed, we read a story like we do each night. I turned on her Stars, sound effects like every night before. And also like most nights she comes out to tell me something she forgot to earlier in the day. And she comes back to tell Zach or dad something, or she needs to go to the bathroom again.

Then after her remembering something she needed to tell me for the 3rd or 4th time I finally said, "Summer, it is bedtime. You need to stop talking and please go to sleep." Then that was when I heard her say the scariest words I've ever heard, "I accidentally swallowed a quarter."

I ran for her bedroom and could immediately tell she was struggling. She was breathing, her color was okay, but I could tell that it hurt. I yelled for Travis to call 911. As Travis was on the phone and they were explaining not to attempt getting it out, no patting her back, no food or drink. She was gagging and trying to throw up, but nothing was really happening.

Thankfully they were so fast. the firemen got to our house and after checking her over felt would could taker her ourselves to the hospital, but said they felt we should get it checked out to make sure it passed all the way through.

We immediately left our house and headed for the ER.

They wasted no time at all. We barely got checked in and they were taking her back for an xray to find out where that quarter was. Then we got back out to our seats and Travis says, "I heard them say 'it's in the esophagus'". Almost immediately they took us back to a room for a Dr to check her out and talk to us.

While we were waiting she started getting sick. Unfortunately she threw up all down her pj bottoms into her slippers but the quarter stayed put. The Dr. came in and confirmed that the quarter was in fact in her esophagus and that they needed her to be taken to the children's hospital for it to be removed.

We left within minutes and headed for Sacred Heart Children's Hospital. Again, everything moved fairly quick. They got us in a room within moments and explained what the process would be.

The nurse came in to put an IV in Summer and that was interesting. They really made it a great experience for Summer (as great as it can be). And they explained what they would be doing to her, but then they had a tablet for her to play a game on while they put in the IV.  Then they had an issue finding her vein and had to switch arms but then they got it.

She certainly doesn't look it, but she was really impressed that her thumb was glowing a bright red.

Immediately after getting her IV in they wheeled her back where we talked with the Dr who was doing the procedure. The explained that they would use anesthesia for her to go to sleep. They would retract the quarter and once she was awake and stable we would be able to go home. The Dr. asked if we had any questions, and Summer speaks up to say, "Can I have my quarter please."

They then took Travis and I to a room as they wheeled Summer off. It was just after midnight. We were exhausted, we were nervous. I felt so sick to my stomach and I couldn't wait for it to be over. Thankfully, within about 45 minutes the Dr. found us and took us to our sleepy girl. Within a few minutes, she was waking up, enjoying a popsicle and not long later she was ready to head home.

This girl gave us quite the scare. Thankfully, everything went smooth. There was no damage to her throat and after a couple days with a sore throat this girl was back to good.

Dating your Daughter

This post has been compensated by IHelpMoms.com and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.

I love having Mama/Daughter time with Summer. She turned 5 a few months ago and still thinks I am the best of the best. I know the days will come when I am not her favorite person, so for now I am going to enjoy every moment of our bestie time together.

I am always looking for new ways to have one on time with the kids. Summer is the easiest because we just happen to like all the same girlie things.

One thing that is great about dating your kids is that they are a pretty cheap date! I mean, it is fun to go out to lunch or go get pedicures and all, but we have lots of fun without spending a bunch of money!

One of Summer's favorite things to do it take selfies. Girlfriend loves to get her picture taken (most of the time!). She loves using the filters on SnapChat - The filters are actually all we use it for! But pretty much any occasion has to be marked with a selfie!

Summer loves to be read to. We are working on learning her sounds and sounding out words so that she is ahead of the game when she heads off to Kindergarten next Fall. Her favorite is Huggy Kissy. Have you read that one before?

Normally painting her nails is enough but one day we ran across fake nails for kids and she thought it was the coolest thing ever! I won't lie, they lasted less than 24 hours and I even found one stuck in her hair the next morning, but she had fun and loved spending the time putting them on!

Matchy matchy! I have made several matching shirts for her and I, and we have matching pajamas. She always asks to wear out matching clothes. But now, thanks to The Dreamland Company we have matching nightgowns!

I love this sleep ware because they are made with LUXE cotton with a touch of stretch and are amazingly soft.  These nightgowns are designed and made by women right here in the USA. And now these adorable kids sizes are available so you and your daughter can match too!

Right now you can even get a great Deal For Moms! SAVE $5 WHEN YOU -- USE CODE: "ihelpmoms"

Don't miss The Dreamland Company on Facebook and Instagram! @TheDreamLandCompany
They would be great Christmas presents for not only yourself and your daughter, but your mom, grandma or any other lady in your life.

I wish I would have had one after having my kids because it would have been great to change into my own nightgown and be comfortable rather than wearing a hospital gown!

Spending a morning with curlers in her hair while we scrapbooked was fun too. Any type of crafts go over well at my house.

Or even a girls day watching girlie movies is good too!

But really, anytime that I get to just relax with my girl makes for a great date!

What are your favorite ways to date your daughter?

Dear Mom

Dear Mom,

What a year it has been. I can't even begin to tell you what I would give to get this last year back with you.

I remember that morning, and the next and so many times after wondering how I would make it through my life without you. And while I'll never have that answer, I just take it one day at a time. Everyday is a new day without you but everyday I remind myself the love we have for each other and the love you had for our entire family. Your love comes through my kids every single day when they (Tyler especially) talk about different things you did together, the times you had together, how much they miss you and love you. We all love you, Mom.

Truly, You were my first friend, my best friend, my forever friend.

Kateandmom

I miss you every single moment.

Coping with Grief

Just over one year ago I took this picture. April 16,2014.

20140416_110614

It was the day after my Mom's heart surgery. It was a day full of happiness, love and relief. I knew that her road ahead would be a long one, but I remember feeling like things were going to be okay.

I remember going to see her that morning and she was getting ready to be moved from the ICU to her room where she would be for the remainder of her stay. I asked her if I could take her picture and without hesitation she said "yes". It was such a feeling of relief that we were out of the "first 24 hours after surgery", which seemed to be the most daunting and now we got to look ahead to recovery and her feeling better. Most of you already know that my Mom passed away just 9 days after her surgery.

Below are many random thoughts that I have had over the past year. And when I say random, I really mean random, unclear, unfocused, sad but trying to be happy. All the normal "Coping with Grief" stuff.

I'm trying focus on the good rather than the bad. The time I had with my mom rather than the time I won't have. In the first few months I kept thinking of the all girly things I had looked forward to doing with my mom and Summer together. The pedicures, the girls weekends away. I was excited to share the things that my mom and I had done together, now with a third generation of girls.

I remember a day long ago when I told someone that I never wanted a girl. That I wouldn't know what to do with a girl. Afterall, I only knew life with a boy. Of course down the road that all changed. I longed for a girl. I looked forward to having a relationship with a daughter that my mom had with hers. And I remember the day in the hospital when Summer came into our life being so happy that it was finally a reality. Now especially, I feel like Summer was chosen for me and my family for an even more specific reason. And while I was grateful for her before, I know I won't take a moment of having a daughter for granted.

These days I am trying to remember this: I had my mom in my life for just over 31 years. I can look back on those 31 years and say we laughed, we cried, we got mad, we faught. But we always had fun, we always made up and most important, we always loved. I remember so many car trips with our music up loud, singing. Our trips to Costco, always leaving with a hot dog and a Coke. Her taking my boyfriend and I to the movies, with her sitting just rows behind us. The pedicures, the shopping trips, sitting on the couch watching movie after movie with a big bowl of popcorn. She was always there for me, and I, there for her.

And while I always wish for her to be here for me and my family, it warms my heart to know where she is now. I think of my Grandma Betty, my mom's mom, who has been gone for almost 20 years and she has now been reunited. I think of her own dad, who she never got to know since she lost him just two days after her first birthday.  Not to mention the countless other people we have lost in our lives. But mostly, I think of the little baby brother I never got to meet. The one my mom lost during her 8th month of pregnancy. The one whos 30th birthday we should have celebrated last year. The one who, I'm sure, was waiting to give her a hug 30 years in the making.

Sometimes, I feel as though I am walking in a constant fog of grief.

I remember a day when my mom was over. Summer had just woken up from a nap and my dad went and got her. When they walked out into the living room I said to Summer, "How is my favorite girl?" to which my mom jokingly said, "I thought I was your favorite girl?" I responded by saying that she was still my favorite but now that Summer is here, she is also my favorite. I can't even begin to count how many times I have played that conversation in my head. While I know that my mom truly meant nothing by it, and for it to be a joke, I still think about it often. About how she was my favorite girl for 29 years of my life and then this little girl comes along and takes her place.  Like I said, I know my mom meant nothing when she said it, but that conversation weighs heavily on my mind.

I recently read this: Can you truly say that God is good?
And my answer is so conflicted. Before April 24, 2014 I would have said yes. I would have said that He has a plan for everything He does. I would have said He has a reason for everything that happens, even though I have known so much loss in my life. But now, I can't help but question everything in life. What good is there to come of me not having my mom? What good is there to come of my kids growing up without a Grandma? What good is there in my dad going to sleep everynight without kissing his wife?  I want to believe with my whole heart that He know what is best for us, but how is this best? How does this make any sense at all?

My mom is gone. My life will never be the same again. No matter what anyone says, it will not get better. It will not get easier. But I am adjusting to my new normal.

In the first few months after my mom passed, so many things happened where my first thought was to call my mom and tell her. Or to think, "I can't wait to tell my mom". Or the feeling in my stomach when I started to call her cell phone and suddenly remember. But I remember a day where I was driving down the road and I had this thought: "I need to call my mom because I haven't talked to her in FOREVER!" It really hurt a split second later when reality hit and reminded my just why.

I have so many angry feelings. I'm not mad at her, but for her.  I'm mad about everything she is missing. I recently was looking through pictures and saw one I took of Summer the day before my mom died. She is so tiny. Such a little baby. She was only saying a handful of words, still being shy. Such short hair, not even touching her shoulders.  And it makes me mad that my mom isn't able to pick up that little girl that adored her so much and cuddle her, or sing her "sunshine" just one more time. It makes me mad that she didn't get to see Tyler on his first day of preschool or Zach's elementary school graduation. Or anything else they do.

So here we are, almost a year later. Today is a really hard day for me. Not only are we just a couple of days from the year anniversary, but today, one year ago was the last time I saw my mom face to face. I went to my parent's house that morning after Easter, but we didn't stay very long. I had Tyler and Summer with me and she talked to them for a few minutes but then my dad and aunt took them outside to look for "dinosaur bones" and "dragon's eggs"- which they found, by the way. My mom and I sat in her bedroom and visited for a little bit. I will never forget the conversation that we had, because I now feel like my mom was telling me the things she did because she knew it was the last time we would be face to face. She was tired and worn out, and knowing I would see her in a day or two I packed up the kids and took off. I talked to her for a brief moment, on speaker phone, that night when I called my dad to check on her.

There is no easy way to cope with grief. And there is no right way to cope with grief. We all do it differently, and at our own pace. Don't ever listen to someone who tells you that "It will get better". Because guess what? IT WILL NOT. But you will adjust to your new normal. Don't listen to anyone who might tell you that you need to move on, or grieve differently. Because as long as you are not harming yourself or someone else, then you are doing just fine.

{17} What is your most proud moment?

What is my most proud moment?

Well, I have 3 of them.

First,
This is the day Zachary was born and I became a mom. 4/27/02

2nd,
This is the day Travis and I got married and made us a family of 3
4/17/10

And Third,
This is the day Tyler was born, making us a family of 4.
10/19/10

{15} Timeline of your day

Timeline of my day

Well, it varies, depending on the day.

If we have nothing planned for the day it goes something like this:

7am wake up for me if I want to shower that day (which I do!)
Zachary is usually up and showered by now, and watching cartoons,
and Travis has left for work. And I am probably starting my post for the day.
7-8 Tyler wake up-gets diaper changed
8-830 breakfast and empty/refill dishwasher
850 Zachary leaves for school

9-1030 is playtime for Tyler and I. Getting some stories read, doing some cuddling,
playing with toys and having a snack.

1030-11 Tyler lays down for a nap

11-230(ish) is time to clean house, do laundry, sweep, catch up on email, blogging,
and these days... my own nap :)

Around 2:30 Tyler is up and gets some lunch.
After lunch is playtime, and time to harass the dog. :)

3pm. Stop whatever you are doing because Ellen is on.
(Tyler will drop whatever is in his hands to come sit with me and watch "Eln"--his words)

3:23 Zachary's home from school
Time for homework

4:30-5 Get going on dinner... What's it going to be tonight?
If I already know, then it can wait longer. :)

4-6 (depending on dinner) You might find us playing outside with the neighbors.
(because even though Tyler acts shy, he loves the neighbor girl.:) -
When he sees her out the front window,
he attempts to call her name. It's cute.)

6 Travis gets home and it's time to eat!
630 we are cleaning up or already done and about to relax.

We might be back outside if it's nice out.

730-8 Tyler bath and ready for bed. Down by 8.

9- Zachary bed time

Depending on what's on TV that night, I might be heading to bed now too.

The only thing that really varies in this schedule is during the morning, if we have something to do
we typically do it once Zach is out the door to school. So groceries, story time at the library, other errands
are all done first thing in the morning. That way I don't mess with Tyler's schedule too much.
If we are in the car during nap time, then he sleeps well in the car too. :)
But I try not to do that too often. It's mainly when I have Dr. appointments, things like that.

So that is our typical day!

{13} What is your earliest memory

What is my earliest memory?

Lets start with this:
I don't have a great memory.
I have a hard time knowing if it's a memory,
or if I know it because it's a story that has been many times.

But one thing I do remember is riding an elephant.
Because ever since that day, elephants have been my favorite animal.
I must have been about 5 or 6.

I was on a school field trip to Walk in the Wild Zoo
(which sadly does not exist anymore)
And I remember being put up on the elephant with my cousin Amber,
and they walked us around in a circle.
(kind of like riding a pony)
I have a Polaroid picture of it somewhere.

23 week bumpdate!

Wow.... I just did the math, and I have 16 weeks until D-Day!!!
I can't get over how fast this pregnancy has already gone!

How far along: 23 weeks! Already!

Total weight gain: 10 pounds as of this morning

Sleep: It's been better, that's for sure. But it's also been worse!

Maternity Clothes: Yep

Gender: We are Team Green so we will find out in September!

Names: Travis asked just a couple of nights ago if we already have it narrowed down.
I felt like giving him a death glare but instead stayed calm and said that
no, we had multiple names for both!
haha... Men!

Stretch marks: No new ones yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time!

Best moment this week: Hearing the peanuts heartbeat (147) during our appointment this week.
Also we have our c-section scheduled for September 17th!
I am super excited for that!

Movement: Oh yes. This peanut is having dance parties multiple times a day!

Food cravings: Arby's roast beef sandwiches with ketchup. I want them all the time!

Labor signs:
Nope. But I think I felt my very first ever Braxton Hicks... Not really sure though!

Belly button - innie or outie: still in!

What are you looking forward to this week: Things getting back to normal around the house.
Travis and his dad have been working on finishing a part of our basement and it's thrown off
Tyler's nap schedule and my internet play time. ;)

Health: Feel really great. I am tired around mid afternoon (right about the time Tyler is waking up)
and I feel like some moments I could eat everything in the house and other times I feel constantly full.
I am swollen enough that I have to take my wedding ring off at night because otherwise
I can't get it off in the morning. (This makes me sad!)

{11} 15 of my favorite things

15 of my favorite things:

Besides the obvious of my family and friends,
these are some of my favorite things:

The Eiffel Tower- I've never been but I know it will still be a favorite after I go!

I love Harry Potter. The books, the movies, everything Harry Potter!

Seattle. Even though I only live hours away I don't go there near enough.

Arby's Roast beef sandwiches. Sooo good!

Blogging: I have always loved to write. And I kept a journal for many years.
Now it's just online for everyone else to read as well!

Calla Lily flowers are my absolute favorite.

Flip flops. I wear these year round. (Yes, I live where it snows)

Vanilla Coke. I was so sad when they got rid of it but so happy when they brought it back!

Yankee Clean cotton candles. Best smell. Ever.

Love. I love it. You really can't live without it.

Pregnancy. One of the best and most amazing things I have ever experienced.

Rascal Flatts. Love these guys. Love their music. It never gets old to me.

Scrapbooking. I scrapbook just about everything. Good or bad, My family will remember.

Iced Caramel Macchiatos. I wish I could drink one everyday. (sometimes I do... shhhh)

Photography. I am not amazing, but I do ok and I love to capture every moment I can.

These are just some of my favorite things.
What are some of yours?

{10} Your best physical feature

My best physical feature....

Since I have so many of them, where do I even start?

kidding.... I'm kidding!

I guess I'd say my best physical feature is my smile.
I'd love to say it's my toned arms or legs,
or my six pack of abs,
but it's not. :) Because I don't have any of those things.

But I do always have a friendly smile to give.
Whether you are happy or sad,
I will be happy to give a smile and hopefully make your day even better.

{9} What are your worst habits

My worst habits:

I have several. {Yep, that's right, I'm not actually perfect!}

I bite my nails. -I go through periods of time where I don't bite them,
and they get long and pretty. Then they get to a point that they start snagging
on everything and I have to cut them off and I am back to biting!

I drink too much coffee/soda- Right now it's not bad because I'm pregnant.
And while I'm breastfeeding I do pretty okay too.
But once that's done I am back to my old self.
Maybe having two kids in two years will help me slow down this time.

I don't eat as healthy as I should. -I could eat a package of Oreos pretty quickly.

I let silly things, that shouldn't matter, get to me.
See my pet peeves.

I'm sure I have plenty more that I can't think of right now,
but I'm sure if you keep following along you will figure them out!

{8} What's in your handbag

What's in my handbag?

Well, right now it's a disaster!
Actually, it always is!

Here is a quick peek!

See? It has no rhyme or reason to it.
Typically I have my wallet, keys, phone,
snacks for Tyler, these days a pair of Tyler's shoes,
chap stick, mints,  and really, who knows what else.
